Microneedling
What is microneedling?
A skin resurfacing technique that involves multiple small pokes from extremely fine needles.
What does it treat?
Fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, dark spots, acne, and rough areas.
How does it work?
It works by penetrating multiple small needles into the superficial layer of the skin, triggering the skin to go into the heal and repair mode. In doing so it lays down new tissue fibers, including the collagen and elastin that play a vital role in the firmness, elasticity, and youthful appearance of skin.
What other procedures can be performed along with microneedling?
Many of our patients will choose to combine microneedling with dermaplaning or a chemical peel (but not all at once) for enhanced results.
Is it painful?
It does require numbing cream, and when it is applied with plenty of time to work the procedure is painless. Best results come with deeper settings on the microneedling device, and for this reason we recommend that patients apply the numbing cream at least 40-60 minutes before the procedure. How long does the procedure take? In all, it’s the numbing that takes the longest!! The procedure itself can be done quickly, in 20-30 minutes. For best results we apply the numbing cream 40-60 minutes beforehand.
What is the recovery time?
This is one procedure that can leave you red for a few hours, so we suggest you do it at a time when you can go home and hunker down for the rest of the evening. By morning you can apply makeup and go about your usual routine.
What special precautions need to be taken after the procedure?
We recommend no makeup for the rest of the day immediately after the procedure. It is important to continue using sunscreen after, and we recommend avoiding products with alpha hydroxy acids or retinol for 3-5 days to maximize healing.
How long do I need to wait after microneedling to do Botox or dermal fillers?
Although technically Botox or fillers are being injected more deeply than the skin and can be done the same day, we recommend waiting 3-5 days.
What if I want to do Botox or dermal fillers BEFORE the microneedling?
We recommend waiting at least a full week to ensure that the Botox has taken effect and that the filler is properly “settled.”
Is it safe for all skin colors?
Yes! Unlike some other procedures that aren’t appropriate for darker skin types, microneedling can be done safely without risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
