Dermaplaning
What is dermaplaning?
A quick, painless way to exfoliate the dry, dead surface skin cells that contribute to aging, dulness, and discoloration.
How is the procedure performed?
A medical grade scalpel is used to gently scrape away the top layer of skin. In doing so it also removes unwanted “peach fuzz.”
What are the benefits?
By removing the peach fuzz and exfoliating the skin we are able to help brighten the complexion and smooth the areas of roughness. Furthermore, it helps makeup go on more evenly with a fresher finish throughout the day.
Is it painful?
No. No numbing is required and most people find it relaxing. Some people say it feels similar to a cat licking their face.
Is there a chance I will get cut by the razor?
The razor is held at an angle that will scrape the skin rather than cut it. Occasionally there can be very small nicks on the surface, but these are very superficial, are usually not felt, and heal quickly.
Will the hair grow back darker and thicker?
No. The quality of hair on the face is determined by hormones and chemical signals deeper down in the follicles. Cutting it on the surface won’t change this.
What is the difference between dermaplaning and microdermabrasion?
Both are a painless way to exfoliate the top layer of hyperkeratinized, dead skin cells, but dermaplaning has a slight advantage in that it removes the hair (microdermabrasion) and its exfoliation is slightly deeper.
Can it be combined with other facial treatments?
Absolutely! Many of our patients like to do dermaplaning before a chemical peel because removing the most superficial layer of dead cells allows for the peel to penetrate more deeply, thus making it more effective. It can also easily be done before a ClearLift or IPL laser treatment.
How long does it take?
Usually between 30-45 minutes.
How often can I have it done?
We recommend at least 3 weeks between treatments. The reason for this is that a single treatment removes approx 21 days worth of buildup of dead cells.
How do I know if I am a good candidate or if this is a good treatment for me?
Usually a dermaplane treatment gets best results if it is combined with high quality skin care and maintenance regimen. Our aestheticians are happy to do a free consultation and come up with a plan that will get you your best overall results!
