What is Clearlift?

It is a cutting edge, noninvasive light-based skin resurfacing technique.

What are the most common reasons for having Clearlift done?
Fine lines, wrinkles, laxity, large pores, and discoloration.

How does it work?
Clearlift technology reaches a depth of subcutaneous tissue that can only be reached with laser technology. Small laser beams penetrate the tissue, causing multiple small microtraumas that then signal the body to kick into the heal and repair mode. When this happens, your body goes to work laying down new collagen, elastin, and tissue. Because it works beneath the epidermis it has the power to stimulate and rebuild the foundation of youthful, vibrant skin.

How many treatments does it take to see results?
For best results we recommend you do 4-5 sessions spaced a month apart. We also recommend “touch up” treatments every 6-8 months.

How long does it take to see results?
Although some patients notice a difference within a couple days, this is not what we tell you to expect. ClearLift rejuvenates the skin from its deeper subcutaneous layer, and it takes weeks to months for the newer, fresher tissue to grow to the surface. Furthermore, each person’s results can also be impacted by overall health (i.e. age, diet, sleep, stress, etc). Generally speaking, the healthier you are on the inside, the better results you’re going to get on the outside.

How long will results last?
Each person will have a different experience, and your results will be impacted by the overall health of your skin and body. The new tissue your body creates in response to the ClearLift treatment doesn’t “go away” per se. It  will wear down and age at the same rate as the rest of your skin.

How will the skin look immediately after the treatment?

Because it penetrates down the deeper subcutaneous tissue, it leaves no mark on the more superficial epidermis. There is no pain, redness, irritation, or abrasion.  Immediately after the treatment you should have no evidence that anything was done at all.

How long does the procedure take?In addition to being effective, it’s also a great anti-aging therapy because it’s quick, usually no more than 20-30 minutes. That’s why it’s nicknamed “The Lunchtime Facelift.” Get in, get out, get on with your day!

Can it help with the particularly tough areas, such as crow’s feet and around the mouth?
Yes. Different tips for our handpiece allow for different levels of penetration within a single treatment, allowing us to give a thorough overall treatment while also being able to hone in on more problem areas. Furthermore, ClearLift is safe enough to be used on the delicate tissues (such as around the eyes) that are normally not candidates for treatment with other more aggressive lasers.

How does it help with discoloration?
When the laser penetrates to the deeper layers of the skin it blasts excess pigment, breaking it up and allowing the body to clear it away. Because of the depth at which this occurs these results won’t be evident for several weeks, until the new skin grows to the surface. Best results require several treatments.

Can it be used on areas other than the face?
Absolutely! Any place where skin is wrinkled, aging, or sagging is a candidate for ClearLift therapy.

Is it painful?
Not at all! In fact, this is one thing that sets ClearLift apart from other lasers on the market and one of the things our patients love most. Many of our patients actually fall asleep, saying it feels like a light facial massage.

How long does the procedure take?
It’s quick. Usually 20-30 minutes.

What kind of laser light is used with ClearLift?
It combines the energy of non-ablative Yag with Pixel Q Switch of 1064 nm.

What is IPL?

IPL is an acronym for “Intense Pulsed Light.” It is a therapy that utilizes the energy emitted from intense light to treat different skin conditions.

What is it used for?
IPL is used primarily for sun and age spots, but it is also beneficial for redness, freckles, broken capillaries, spider veins, rosacea, and wrinkles/fine lines. Certain IPL machines also remove unwanted hair.

How does it work?
The light from IPL is attracted to pigment (melanin, blood vessels, or pigment from hair follicles). Once the light energy enters the skin it is instantaneously turned into heat energy that targets and destroys the pigment it comes in contact with.

Can it be done on suntanned or ethnically darker skin?
Unfortunately, because of the amount of baseline pigment in darker skin great caution must be used. If this baseline pigment gets destroyed it can leave behind unwanted light spots that are permanent. The best way to know how the skin responds to IPL is to first do a test in an inconspicuous area.

Is it painful?
The Alma Harmony IPL has several different settings, and generally speaking the lighter the setting the less it will be felt. It feels similar to the fick of a rubber band. Lower settings might not be felt at all, which higher settings can be uncomfortable.

What can I expect during a procedure?
It depends on the settings used for the treatment. Alma Harmony IPL has two different settings: motion and pulse. With the “pulse” settings the light energy introduced into the skin can feel like a little rubber band snap. With the “motion” setting patients primarily just feel the heat coming off the part of the applicator in contact with the skin. In both cases, the higher the settings the more intensely it is felt by the skin.

What can I expect after a procedure?
After the treatment it is common to experience mild redness and swelling, similar to a mild sunburn. If the “pulse” setting is used over the next few days you should notice an increase in the dark spots and blemishes as they come to the surface of the skin. Often they will look like coffee grounds. Eventually these spots will flake away. If the “motion” setting is used you might not notice any difference right away.

What is the down time?
There is no down time after the procedure. However, it is recommended that you wear minimal makeup for approximately 12 hours after.

What special precautions need to be taken after the procedure?
The most important thing to do is to wear sunscreen and avoid sun exposure for at least 2 weeks after the procedure. Although you can’t see it on the surface, the skin is in healing mode and is more sensitive than normal. Sun exposure can easily damage it. Also, because IPL is a heat-based treatment, it is a good idea not to expose the skin to further excessive heat from hot baths, saunas, or intense physical activity for 24-48 hours. It is also a good idea to come back in 2-3 weeks later for a dermaplane to exfoliate and remove the remaining dead skin cells.

RF Skin Tight is a treatment that uses unipolar radiofrequency energy to heat the skin, resulting in a stimulation of new collagen production and tightening of already existing collagen fibers. This results in tighter, brighter, more youthful skin.

The RF Skin Tight treatment is safe, painless, and non-invasive. It can be used on all skin types and is appropriate for the thin, delicate skin of the face, neck, and decollete. It can also be used on any other part of the body, including hands and arms.

RF Skin Tight is a great option for anyone wanting help with fine lines and wrinkles, sagging, or help restoring their natural glow. The production of new collagen can also create a smoother tone and texture.

Frequently asked questions:

What is the down time? There is no downtime! You can get in, get out, and get on with your day.

Is there any bruising or redness after treatments? Because the radiofrequency does heat the skin, it might be slightly red and warm to the touch immediately after, but this usually subsides within minutes.

Can I put makeup on after the treatment? Yes. Any makeup touch-ups can be done immediately after treatment.

How long does it take for the treatment to be completed? Usually 20-30 minutes

Is it painful? There is no pain. Most patients describe the treatment as a warm massage. No numbing is required.

How many treatments are needed? Some people see results after only one treatment, but we recommend 3-5 treatments for best results.

How long should I wait between treatments? Because it takes time for new collagen production, we recommend waiting 3-4 weeks between treatments.

Can this be combined with other treatments? Yes. If you are interested in doing other treatments (including injectables such as Sculptra, botulinum toxins, or dermal fillers) before or after, we recommend spacing them out by two weeks. Some people do notice that RF Skin Tight can make their dermal fillers dissolve more quickly, so if you are considering fillers it is best to complete your RF Skin Tight treatments first.

How long will it take to see results? Some patients see results almost immediately because of the shrinkage of collagen fibers, but the production of new collagen can take several weeks, so final results can sometimes take months to see.

AFT Acne Laser destroys bacteria, reduces redness, rejuvenates skin

Our Acne AFT Pulsed Light treatment utilizes wavelengths of light specifically targeted toward inflammatory acne. It employs proprietary pulsed light technology in the blue wavelength range (420-950 nm) ideal for permeating the skin and killing acne-causing bacteria.

There are many factors that contribute to acne, and one of the biggest is a specific bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes that colonize inside sebaceous glands, causing them to clog. This leads to lesions, pustules, cysts, and inflammation.

  1. P. acnes also produces special organic compounds called porphyrins. The Acne AFT module emits intense blue light that targets these porphyrins. When the porphyrins absorb the light, free radical damage is produced and rapidly kills the bacteria without causing any damage to the surrounding tissue. By getting at the root of acne, our patients can see a significant reduction in lesions, pustules, inflammation, and scarring.

Acne AFT Pulsed Light treatment can be adjusted for use on all skin types, although we recommend avoiding it if you have done any recent tanning or have had significant sun exposure in the four weeks prior to treatment. As the bacterial load decreases, the pores are able to clear and the skin can repair and heal.

Frequently asked questions

How many treatments are usually required? A total of 8 treatments is the usual recommendation, although some people need fewer and some people need more.

How frequently should treatments be done? They can be done as frequently as every 48-72 hours. For moderate to severe acne we recommended twice a week for a month.

How long do results last? This is different for everyone, but on average the results last over 3 months. Some people will need touch-up treatments for outbreaks. Because there are so many internal health factors that contribute to acne (e.g. hormones, diet, stress, detoxification) we highly recommend setting up a consultation with Dr. Wheeler to address the internal health issues that might be contributing.

How effective is it? Studies have shown the Acne AFT treatment to be as effective as antibiotics without the side effects. Some people respond very well to the Acne AFT treatment, but others do not respond at all, and there is no way of being able to predict who will and won’t respond.

What do I need to do before treatment? No special precautions are necessary, although we do recommend thoroughly removing makeup before the treatment. We don’t recommend this treatment if you are tanned (fake or natural), and it is best to let any tans fade before treatment.

Can I go out in the sun immediately after? Yes, although we recommend you always use appropriate sunscreen.

Can I put makeup on immediately after? Yes.

What is the downtime? There is none. After the treatment, the skin might be a little red and warm, but this usually subsides within a few minutes. Some people with very sensitive skin might have a histamine reaction that causes swelling, redness, and little red bumps (like a rash), and this usually resolves within 6-8 hours and can be treated with an antihistamine such as benadryl.

Will the acne start improving right away? Yes and no. For some people the results start appearing immediately, and for others the inflammation might actually get worse initially before getting better.

Can I do this if I am on other acne medications? It depends on the medication. We recommend the following wait time for certain medications:

  • Any photosensitizing antibiotic (e.g. tetracycline, minocycline) or herbal medication (e.g. St. Johnswort) -- 10 days
  • Isotretinoin (e.g. Accutane) --6 months
  • Tretinoin (e.g. Retin-A) -- 5 days

Are there people who should NOT have this treatment? We recommend against this treatment if you have vitiligo (hypopigmentation), any active inflammatory skin condition (e.g. cold sores, shingles, eczema) at the treatment site, any wounds that have not yet healed, or a previous poor response to pulsed light or laser treatments.

Can this be done on teenagers? Yes, but anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult or guardian.

What is microneedling?
A skin resurfacing technique that involves multiple small pokes from extremely fine needles.

What does it treat?
Fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, dark spots, acne, and rough areas.

How does it work?
It works by penetrating multiple small needles into the superficial layer of the skin, triggering the skin to go into the heal and repair mode. In doing so it lays down new tissue fibers, including the collagen and elastin that play a vital role in the firmness, elasticity, and youthful appearance of skin.

What other procedures can be performed along with microneedling?
Many of our patients will choose to combine microneedling with dermaplaning or a chemical peel (but not all at once) for enhanced results.

Is it painful?
It does require numbing cream, and when it is applied with plenty of time to work the procedure is painless. Best results come with deeper settings on the microneedling device, and for this reason we recommend that patients apply the numbing cream at least 40-60 minutes before the procedure. How long does the procedure take? In all, it’s the numbing that takes the longest!! The procedure itself can be done quickly, in 20-30 minutes. For best results we apply the numbing cream 40-60 minutes beforehand.

What is the recovery time?
This is one procedure that can leave you red for a few hours, so we suggest you do it at a time when you can go home and hunker down for the rest of the evening. By morning you can apply makeup and go about your usual routine.

What special precautions need to be taken after the procedure?
We recommend no makeup for the rest of the day immediately after the procedure. It is important to continue using sunscreen after, and we recommend avoiding products with alpha hydroxy acids or retinol for 3-5 days to maximize healing.

How long do I need to wait after microneedling to do Botox or dermal fillers?
Although technically Botox or fillers are being injected more deeply than the skin and can be done the same day, we recommend waiting 3-5 days.

What if I want to do Botox or dermal fillers BEFORE the microneedling?
We recommend waiting at least a full week to ensure that the Botox has taken effect and that the filler is properly “settled.”

Is it safe for all skin colors?
Yes! Unlike some other procedures that aren’t appropriate for darker skin types, microneedling can be done safely without risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Silk Peel is a luxurious skin rejuvenation treatment that combines deep exfoliation, hydration, and infusion of botanical nutrients into the skin.

It is a powerful, relaxing way to remove impurities while simultaneously delivering serums that moisturize, brighten, and protect. It is suitable for all skin types and can be customized for your specific needs. Settings and serums can be customized to make the treatment as gentle or as aggressive as you need.

Unlike other places that offer similar services, our signature serums are 100% botanical and non-synthetic. They harness the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and brightening power of plants to hydrate, slow aging, soothe the skin, and protect against damage. The result is a more youthful, natural glow.

Our deep exfoliation leaves the skin supple and smooth. It gently removes the hard, keratinized layer of skin that contributes to dullness and aging. It also helps moisturizers and makeup go on more evenly.

There is zero downtime and zero pain. Each treatment takes 30-60 minutes, and because it is completely painless you don’t need to use any numbing cream. Furthermore, after the treatment there is no swelling, no tenderness, and no bruising you are free to resume your normal activities. You can even put on your makeup, go to the gym, or go out in the sun immediately after (although we do recommend you use sunscreen).

Because it is a painless procedure, you don’t need to use any numbing cream.

Ready to get rid of the razor for good but not wanting to endure the pain of laser hair removal? We have what you are looking for! Introducing the Soprano ICE hair removal laser.

What makes this treatment so great?

The Alma Soprano ICE Platinum laser machine uses the most cutting-edge technology on the market to effectively and quickly stop hair growth without the pain that comes with other machines. The “ICE” part of the name refers to its patented cooling system that minimizes discomfort. Furthermore, the in-motion technology of the Soprano ICE Platinum gives 10 treatment pulses per second, allowing for significantly faster treatment times than other lasers. For instance, the typical time it takes to treat an entire back is around 35-45 minutes. With the Soprano ICE Platinum this treatment can be completed in only 6 minutes! This allows you to comfortably get in, get out, and get on with your day!!

Is it completely painless?

Because everyone feels discomfort and pain differently we can’t claim that it is 100% pain free. We can claim that the patented ICE cooling technology will allow you a significantly more comfortable hair removal experience than you would have with other machines.

Can it be used on tanned or dark skin?

Yes. One of the biggest concerns with other devices is that they cannot be used on darker skin, but the technology of the Soprano ICE allows it to be safely used on all skin types, including suntanned skin.

Is it effective on light hair?

Unfortunately no. There is currently no laser hair removal device on the market that is effective against light hair.

How many treatments will I need?

Everyone is completely unique in this regard. The number of treatments needed will depend on multiple factors including hair thickness, pigment, and location. A patient’s hormonal balance and nutritional status will also likely play a role. The average number of treatments needed for complete treatment is 6-8.

How does it differ from other types of hair removal systems?

To answer this question it is important to first understand how laser hair removal works:

Two common methods of permanently slowing or stopping hair growth are IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and laser (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation). They are often used interchangeably, most people referring to both of them as laser treatments, but IPL and laser are not the same treatment.

Similarities between IPL and laser for hair removal:

  • Both treat the skin with intense light energy which turns into heat in the skin. This heat causes damage to the hair follicle and slows growth of new hairs.
  • Both are attracted to pigment such as the pigment in hair follicles. This is the reason the treatments are more effective with dark hairs than light. Darker hairs have more pigment to attract the light, hence making them a better target.
  • The energy of the light is converted to heat. The heat reaches a critical point in the follicle, causing destruction that will lead to a slowing or permanent cessation of hair growth.
  • Both usually require several treatments to effectively treat the hair follicles in their varying stages of growth.

Differences between IPL and laser:

  • IPL utilizes broad spectrum visible light (multiple wavelengths), whereas lasers utilize only one wavelength.
  • Because the IPL uses a broader spectrum of light it spreads out and can cover bigger areas than the laser. This can make treatments faster but also is potentially less effective and would require more treatments. It also makes it a more risky option for darker skin tones since the light will likely be attracted to the pigment in both the hair and the skin.
  • Laser light is more specific and doesn’t spread as much as IPL. This means it more effectively targets the hair follicle without destroying the pigment in the skin. This makes it a better option for darker skin tones (including natural sun tans).
  • Because laser light is more expensive to generate it often costs more. That being said, it is also more effective and requires fewer treatments.

Achieve incredible lifting, firming, and smoothing with this treatment that penetrates deeply and stimulates renewal through active ingredients and multi-wavelength light therapy.

Cutting edge botanical and active ingredients fight against wrinkles, fine lines, sagging, and dullness while stimulating and supporting cellular regeneration and repair. They penetrate deeply to purify congested pores and provide nourishment.

This facial can decrease inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which are major contributors to aging and degeneration. It also helps to balance oil production and fight against acne breakouts. It is powerful enough to protect against environmental stress and daily wear but also gentle enough for use on sensitive and irritated skin.

LED photon light therapy combines different wavelengths of light that each possess unique healing capacities and work synergistically to maximize effectiveness of other facial treatments. Promotes cellular repair and regeneration for the appearance of optimal youthful skin.

  • 640 nm red light: boosts your natural collagen production and combats signs of aging. Soothes inflammation. Stimulates circulation and oxygen delivery to cells.
  • 423 nm blue light: kills the bacteria that contribute to acne and breakouts. Can help normalize the size of oil glands.
  • 583 nm yellow light: supports collagen production and wound healing. Can help subdue rosacea and redness. Stimulates the lymphatic system that assists with toxin removal.

Our luxurious back facial is the perfect way to unwind and enjoy relaxation while pampering the often-neglected skin of the back and shoulders. It combines multiple different modalities for clearing out pores, exfoliating dead skin cells, and improving the circulation and lymphatic drainage of the skin. This treatment offers a great escape from the stresses of the day, and the hot stone therapy is the perfect finishing touch for rejuvenation.

The first step in this treatment is a gentle dry brush treatment. This helps remove the top layer of dead cells that dull and age the skin. Dry brushing improves circulation and lymphatic drainage, and it helps prepare the skin for deeper absorption of the active ingredients used in other steps of the treatment.

After the dry brush treatment, you will experience a deep cleanse with one of our high quality botanical cleansers. Our products for this are 100% natural, organic, and non-synthetic. After cleansing, we exfoliate with a gentle sugar scrub infused with essential oils. This scrub deeply cleans dirt, oil, and pollutants from the skin. Topical (not dietary) sugar has a natural anti-aging effect on the skin and helps reveal more radiant skin with a healthier glow. The essential oils used in this step are known to fight dullness, aging, and oxidation.

After the sugar scrub exfoliation, our highly-trained aesthetician will pamper you with a hot stone treatment. This step relaxes stressed and tired muscles while opening the pores and enhancing penetration of the active, nutrient-rich ingredients used on your back.

Detoxification with a green or red clay masque is the second-to-last step. Clay is well known for its detoxifying and purifying properties. It helps to absorb toxins and can decrease inflammation and balance oil production.

The finishing touch is a light layer of one of our premium moisturizers that will leave the skin nourished, supple, and protected from environmental stress and dryness.

Deeply cleanses, exfoliates, and detoxifies

I already take oral supplements, why should I Get an IV?

When it comes to hydrating your body and delivering specialized nutrition, IV therapy is flat-out more effective than oral supplementation. The nutrition is delivered faster and your body absorbs a lot more of it.

When you consume nutrients orally, they have to go through your digestive system and metabolize before your body can use them. It’s a slow process and the reality is that orally consumed vitamins are around 50% bioavailable at best. Yikes.

Intravenous supplement therapy is widely heralded as an extremely effective treatment that can help you overcome inflammation, dehydration, and various fatigue-related ailments. Come see how it feels to hydrate your body from the inside out!

Options at Wholesome Health & Aesthetics:

MAH (Major Autohemotherapy)
UBI (Ultraviolet blood irradiation)

Ozone therapies have become increasingly popular in the world of integrative healing. It upregulates healing mechanisms at a cellular level and is powerful, safe, and effective treatment for both chronic and acute conditions.

Ozone is a molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms hooked together as opposed to the oxygen we breathe which is just two oxygen atoms hooked together. The third oxygen in the group makes the molecule much more reactive, and when it is introduced into the body in one of its various forms it is able to induce several reactions that contribute to healing and regeneration.

Benefits of ozone include the following:

  • Increased immunity. Our immune systems have many different parts that must function in perfect balance for optimal health. If it is imbalanced in one direction we will be prone to poor resilience against viruses and illnesses. These are usually the people who get sick very easily, who complain that if anybody brings a virus into the house they are going to catch it. Poor immune function can contribute to the development of cancer. Imbalance in the other direction can cause other problems where the immune system is revved up and they are constantly in a state of attack or inflammation. These conditions usually include autoimmune diseases, chronic pain, and chronic degenerative conditions. When your immune system is constantly on the attack your body isn’t given the chance to switch gears and heal.
    • Prescription medications generally don’t have the ability to address this double-edged sword, and ozone therapy is one of the few treatments that has the ability to improve the body’s ability to modulate the immune system. It boosts your ability to fight the bad guys such as viruses, bacteria, and cancer cells, while also causing a reaction in our cells that turns off the inflammatory response and allows new cells to regenerate.
  • Improved energy. Energy, or ATP, is made by crucial machinery in the cells called mitochondria. ATP fuels every single function in our bodies. Whether it is something as simple as blinking your eyes, or formulating a thought or something bigger such as running a race or giving a speech, all of that is being fueled by ATP. Research is showing that many of the degenerative conditions of our day come down to a decrease in mitochondrial function. Signs that you might not be making enough ATP include fatigue, chronic muscle pains, brain fog, weight struggles, headaches and depression. Decreased mitochondrial function has also been associated with cancer, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, kidney and liver failure, and the aging process in general. Ozone therapy can help “turn on” these dysfunctional mitochondria and help them start producing adequate ATP again.
  • Improved blood flow and oxygen delivery to the tissues. The delivery of oxygen and nutrients take place in these teeny little vessels called capillaries. These vessels are actually so small that red blood cells have to pass through one at a time and they also have to do a little bit of squeezing and deforming to get through. When the red blood cells are rigid they can’t get through the capillary as well and they also can’t deliver oxygen and nutrients the way they need to. Another thing that happens with blood flow is that the red blood cells can start sticking together in what we call a rouleaux formation. When they are stuck together they are limited in their ability to deliver oxygen to the cells. Ozone actually changes the electrical charge of the blood cells so that they are less likely to stick together and it also gives the membrane more flexibility to squeeze through the capillary more effectively.

There are different ways to administer ozone. It can be given intravenously (via a method called “major autohemotherapy”), intramuscularly or into the joint (via a method called “prolozone”), or infused into cavities such as the nose, ears, rectum, or vagina (via a method called “insufflation”).

Major autohemotherapy, the IV form of ozone administration, is a procedure where a small amount of blood is drawn out of the body and injected into a bag of saline. Ozone gas is then mixed in with the blood. Once this is complete, the blood is returned back to the body, usually first passing through different wavelengths of ultraviolet light

This process is fairly fast and usually takes 30-45 minutes from start to finish, depending on how healthy your veins are. This form of ozone treatment is Dr. Wheeler’s favorite simply because it delivers ozone to the entire body, and it gives the most bang for the buck. It can be given as a one-time treatment, as in the case of acute illness, or in a series of multiple treatments, as in the case of autoimmune illness, chronic fatigue, or inflammatory conditions.

There are concerns on what happens when a patient inhales Ozone and how it affects the lungs. If directly inhaled, Ozone is toxic and usually causes coughing but a large amount could lead to chemical pneumonia. This risk is only associated with inhaling ozone, not mixing with the patient's blood. For this reason we take great measures and extreme care to make sure patients do not inhale the ozone.

A common side effect of MAH is that patient will experience a temporary flare of inflammation while the immune system is "turning on" and adjusting to the treatment. This may lead to increased symptoms but is typically limited to 24-48 hours. These side effects will get better and better over repeated infusions as the body adapts, heals, and gets stronger.

What is the Pixel RF?
Our state-of-the-art Pixel RF is a micro-plasma treatment that resurfaces and rejuvenates skin via  concentrated radiofrequency energy. It is one of most effective skin treatments on the markets, and it rivals the results seen with aggressive CO2 laser treatments without the downtime or risks associated with CO2 resurfacing.

How does it work?
Pixel RF works by causing controlled thermal ablation to the deeper layers of the skin, triggering tightening, smoothing, and contouring without disruption to the epidermis (the visible layer of the skin). The patented glide tip delivers energy in a pinpoint, controlled fashion, causing microperforations that tell the surrounding healthy skin to kick into the “heal and repair” mode. This ultimately boosts and improves the production of collagen and elastin resulting in younger, softer skin within even the first treatment!

Because it reaches a depth that can only be achieved through laser and radiofrequency technology it is particularly helpful for deep scarring, stretch marks, and aging.

What are the common conditions treated with Pixel RF?
Here are some of the most common occurrences that Pixel RF can treat:

  • Acne scarring
  • Sagging skin in the cheeks, jowls, and/or neck
  • Light or deep wrinkles
  • Rough, bumpy texture
  • Stretch mark
  • Scar improvement
  • Brow and neck lifting
  • Hand rejuvenation

What areas of the body can be treated?
The RF Micro-Needling Pixel can be used across the body. The most popular areas to treat are the: face, neck, chest, hands, and abdomen.

How many treatments will it take before I see results?
Most clients see visible improvement after their first treatment! However, the more damage the skin carries, the more treatments may be needed to help heal it. The average treatment plan suggestion is 3 sessions, 4 weeks apart.

Do I qualify for RF Micro-Needling treatment?
The answer is more than likely, yes! Because of the safety and adjustable nature of the Pixel RF, it  is safe for any skin type, color, or age. The only contraindications for this treatment are:

  • Open sores or active infections (including active herpes complex)
  • Within 6 months of Accutane use
  • Keloid scarring on desired treatment area
  • Pregnancy or breast-feeding
  • Electronic implants (pacemaker, LVAD, insulin pump, etc.)

Clients may also be advised to avoid the following before and after their treatment:

  • Sunburns and self tanning lotions
  • Retin-A’s, AHA’s, and/or any medications that list photosensitivity as a side effect
  • Fillers, Botox, or plastic surgery (varies on time needed to recover, always keep your technician in the loop)

What does the downtime look like?
This is a minimally invasive treatment, which means clients can expect little discomfort and very little downtime! Immediately after the treatment you should expect to be red, and we recommend no makeup for the rest of the day. Depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment, the redness can last anywhere from a few hours to several days. The skin might be a little sensitive to heat (hot baths, intense exercise, direct sunlight) for 24-48 hours, but this discomfort is usually minimal. This is not the kind of treatment that will keep you away from social engagements for 2-3 weeks (like a CO2 laser), but it is a deep enough treatment that we don’t recommend doing it if you have important events over the next couple of days.

As the skin heals and tightens you should expect an itching sensation. This is usually nothing to worry about. It just means the treatment is doing what it’s supposed to do.

How is Pixel RF different from traditional Micro-Needling?
The RF Micro-Needling Pixel from Alma Lasers has a head of tiny needles–much like a traditional Micro-Needling machine–that a technician will roll across the treatment area. Unlike the microneedling, however, the Pixel RF needles don’t generally penetrate the epidermis.

Traditional Micro-needling damages the epidermis (or the first layer of skin) and causes the body’s natural healing process to kick in. With Radio-Frequency Micro-Needling, the needles are simply a carrier for the radio-frequency to penetrate to the deeper dermis. This dermal layer is where the body stores its collagen and elastin, which are two imperative proteins that keep your skin young and taut. When exposed to the  radio-frequency and thermal energy, the dermal layer is tricked into believing it needs to fortify itself and it does so by improving its collagen and elastin production.

In a nutshell, the difference between traditional and RF Microneedling is simply deeper penetration and improved immediate results.

How is Pixel RF different from microneedle RF?
Both micro-plasma (Pixel RF) and microneedle RF are great options for smoothing and resurfacing the skin. Both have been found in studies to be very safe and effective. Some studies have shown the micro-plasma technology to be more effective in skin resurfacing.

Is it painful?
We recommend the same numbing protocol as is used for a traditional microneedling treatment. This involves topical numbing cream applied prior to your appointment.  Because the efficacy of the Pixel RF treatment is dependent on the aggressiveness of the settings used, we recommend a minimum of 60 minutes with the numbing cream. Additionally, for patients who are particularly anxious or sensitive, we offer in-office nitrous oxide (laughing gas).

How long does it take?
Honestly, the longest part of this procedure is the numbing! We tell patients to anticipate an hour in the office (this includes time in the waiting room), but it usually doesn’t take quite that long.

Our Accent Prime body sculpting treatment is a painless, non-invasive treatment that uses ultrasound waves to break down fat cells and radiofrequency to tighten and tone the skin. The result is a reduction of stubborn fat pockets in areas such as the abdomen, thighs, arms, back, and love handles. This treatment can help contour the body and give a more sculpted appearance without any needles or downtime.

In addition to gently sculpting away unwanted pockets of fat, our Accent Prime treatment can also target cellulite by targeting the fibrous bands responsible for a dimpled appearance. The RF (radiofrequency) energy helps smooth out the skin’s texture and decrease the appearance of cellulite.

RF energy tightens the skin by heating the deeper layers, stimulating collagen production and promoting tissue tightening. This helps improve elasticity and firmness, reducing the appearance of sagging or loose skin.

Frequently asked questions:

Is there pain? No. Many patients say it feels like a warm massage.

Is there any downtime? No. You can go right back to your regular activities after the treatment.

Is there any bruising? Not typically, although it does happen occasionally and is not worrisome if it does.

How many sessions are required? Everyone is different, but we recommend a minimum of 4-6 treatments before expecting to see results. In fact, if you are not prepared to commit to at least four treatments it is likely not worth your money or time to start. If you think you are going to need more than 8-10 treatments, you may want to consider something slightly more invasive like Bodytite or Facetite, our in-office liposuction options.

How long before I see results? Once the fat cells have been destroyed the body will clear them out through the lymphatic system just like it does any other dead cells. Furthermore, the collagenesis (new collagen production) and skin tightening stimulated by the RF (radiofrequency) can take several weeks. For this reason we tell our patients not to expect final results until about 3 months after their final treatment.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate? Before any treatment is started, every patient will first have a consultation with Dr. Wheeler or our body sculpting specialist to outline an optimal treatment plan. Quite frequently our patients need help with weight loss in general, so they have the option of joining our 8-week weight loss course.

What do I need to do to get the best results? The Accent Prime technology works best to destroy fat cells best when they are well hydrated. For that reason we recommend drinking at least 8 glasses of water for three days before and and three days after each treatment. Staying well hydrated after the treatment helps the body eliminate the lipids and glycerides broken down by the ultrasound treatment. It is also important to avoid alcohol for 3 days before and after each treatment because the metabolism of alcohol can impede the body’s breakdown and clearance of fat cells. Anything that improves circulation (saunas, exercise, yoga, etc) will help to optimize results.

How much time do I need between treatments? We recommend waiting 1-2 weeks between treatments.

How is this different from coolsculpting? Coolsculpting is a body sculpting option that destroys fat cells by freezing them. Coolsculpting is also very safe and effective but it can only be used in very specific parts of the body and tends to be more expensive per treatment. It also usually requires multiple treatments.

How do I choose between Accent Prime, Coolsculpting, liposuction, or the weight loss class? When you meet with our body sculpting specialist, she will be able to guide you to what is likely going to give the best results. Quite often, more than one modality is needed and our specialist can help coordinate the most effective, cost efficient plan to get you to your body shaping goals.

How is this different from liposuction? Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure where the area of concern is filled with numbing fluid, after which the fat is loosened and removed via gentle suction. Liposuction is a great option for bigger areas that require more fat removal. Liposuction gets rid of fat cells by physically removing them from the body, and Accent Prime gets rid of fat cells by destroying them and allowing the body to clear them out over time. Click here for more information on liposuction.

What areas of the body can be treated? As opposed to coolsculpting, Accent Prime can be used on any area. The most common body parts are the abdomen, flanks, love handles, inner and outer thighs, and bra fat.

Can this help me lose weight? We do not recommend this for weight loss. Nor do we recommend Coolsculpting or liposuction for weight loss. These procedures combine beautifully with weight loss, but they are specifically designed for sculpting and are not likely to make much of a difference on the scale. Click here for more information on our popular 8-week weight loss course.

What does it cost? Currently it is $150/area for members of our inside-out beauty membership. $300/area is the non-member price. For more information on our membership program click here.  A single “treatment area” is generally the size of an 8x10 sheet of paper, although it might be as small as the small area right under the chin. Frequently, an Accent Prime body sculpting session will cover only one treatment area, but it is common for two or more areas needing coverage in a single session (i.e. a large abdomen could need three or four treatment areas to be adequately covered). Areas that are bilateral, such as arms or legs generally get counted as one treatment area each (there is no “splitting” the treatments and doing half on one side and half on the other).

CoolSculpting is a safe fat-freezing method used to contour your body. Medical professionals like those at Wholesome Aesthetics can help you target specific problem areas of your body using this method. Popular body areas to coolsculpt are the stomach, chin, upper arms, “love handles” of the lower back, and “bra bulges” of the upper back. CoolSculpting is meant to supplement, not replace, diet and exercise in shaping your body. This method is intended to alter the appearance of fat, not cause weight loss.

How does CoolSculpting work?

CoolSculpting is a form of cryolipolysis, a fat reduction method that uses freezing temperatures to break down fat cells. Since fat has a higher freezing temperature than other cells, CoolSculpting can freeze the fat without harming surrounding tissue. In this non-invasive technique, licensed professionals use cooling applicators on the targeted body area to freeze and destroy up to 25% of the unwanted fat cells. In the weeks following the procedure, your body’s immune system naturally eliminates the dead fat cells.

CoolSculpting typically takes 35-60 minutes per application. Following the procedure, patients start to see some results in three weeks and full results in six months.

How many applications are required for results?

This varies widely amongst patients. Some patients need as few as 1-2 applications in a single treatment, and others do 4-6. Furthermore, it is common for best results to require at least 2 treatments. Before embarking on a treatment, we will always do a free consultation to come up with a plan that best suits your needs.

Is CoolSculpting safe?

CoolSculpting is a safe FDA approved technique used by many medical professionals, including Dr. Laramie Wheeler at Wholesome Aesthetics. Because it is a non-invasive procedure that doesn’t require any needles or incisions, risks are minimal.

Am I a good candidate for CoolSculpting?

Good candidates for CoolSculpting:

  • Want to reduce fat in a specific area
  • Have enough fat for CoolSculpting to be effective. Typically, patients need enough fat to be “pincheable” for this treatment to be effective
  • Want to reduce body fat, not excess skin. CoolSculpting will not eliminate loose skin
  • Are close to their ideal body weight. CoolSculpting is not a weight loss technique

Patients with some medical conditions are not candidates for CoolSculpting. You can request a consultation with Dr. Wheeler to determine if this treatment will work for you.

What is recovery like?

Typical side effects following CoolSculpting include temporary numbness, redness, bruising, tingling, firming, and swelling. You will be able to return to your normal daily routine immediately following the procedure. Patients see full results within six months.

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a cocktail of assorted acids, found naturally in citrus fruits and the body itself, to chemically exfoliate the skin’s surface.  A minimally invasive treatment, the effects are incredibly rewarding to your skin’s appearance and health. Various peels are used to target wrinkles, pigmentation, texture or scarring, among other visual skin issues. Chemical peels are an affordable way to keep your skin glowing and healthy, and to put off the aging process that is visible in the skin.

Why does it work?

Throughout your life, your skin has a continuously working cell turnover rate, which ends in dead skin cells that detach and slough off the face of the skin. With age, the rate at which the skin produces new cells begins to slow, and the collagen and elastin in our skin gets lazy. The repetitive action of receiving chemical peels regularly induces a more rapid rate of the skin’s natural wear, death, and renewal cycle through stimulating the growth of that collagen and elastin. Because of this, the skin cells that are renewed don’t have time to replicate pigmentation, scarring, and wrinkles as deeply as it would if it were left to develop over weeks, months, or years.

What to expect during treatment

Our talented estheticians are trained to keep you as comfortable as possible during this treatment. To begin, the skin will be cleansed and stripped of any oils or debris that might be blocking the pores. Then, the chemical peel will be applied to your skin’s surface. A rise in chemical activity may be accompanied by a slight stinging or burning sensation, however, your esthetician will be there at all times during the treatment to ensure your comfortability. The chemicals introduced to your skin will cause the skin cells treated to slough off over the next few days.

What to do before treatment:

Consider scheduling treatment for a time when you have at least a few days to yourself, out of the sun, and no need for makeup. Depending on the anticipated treatment you may be asked to stop using any facial products with retinoids (Retin-A, Tazorac, Reova, Differin), salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, alpha hydroxyl acids, and glycolic acid at least 5 days before your procedure. These products can make the skin more thin and sensitive, leading to an unanticipated, over-exaggerated response to the chemicals used in the peel.

What to expect and do after treatment

After treatment, it’s completely normal to expect redness, dryness, and maybe some tenderness around your treatment site. Within a day or two, those should go away. About the third day, you’ll more than likely be experiencing tightness and a change in the texture of your skin to look almost leathery. By day five, the peeling process should have begun, and will most likely persist for a few days.

During the process, remember to wear Sunscreen SPF 35+. The most important step you can take to protect your skin after a chemical peel is to stay out of the sun. Your skin has essentially just experienced a mild burn, so sunscreen and protection are a must.

Do not pick at peeling skin. As tempting as it may be, as your skin begins to peel, do not pick at the dead skin. This can expose new skin cells too soon and cause scabbing or even permanent pigmentation. You may use clean scissors to trim the sheets that may be stubborn in holding on.

Avoid makeup. Avoid using makeup during the healing process until the skin stops peeling. Earlier use might block the healing pores and cause bacterial issues or acne, and it just won’t go on smoothly while you peel!

Moisturize. Keep your skin thoroughly moisturized to expedite the healing process, and to keep you as comfortable as possible throughout.

How often should I receive a chemical peel for the best results?

Ultimately, the decision will be made between you and your specialist, however, we typically recommend once a month treatment. In conjunction, chemical peels can be used alongside microneedling to achieve the best results.

For patients receiving monthly laser treatments through our membership program, chemical peels are a great in between option to keep skin youthful and rejuvenated.

Are some chemical peels more gentle than others?

Yes! Our peels range from gentle to aggressive.  Generally, the more aggressive ones will peel more and also give better results, but not everybody’s skin is appropriate for the deeper peels.

How long will my skin peel after treatment?

It depends on the aggressiveness of your peel. Some will give hardly any flaking or peeling at all, and others will peel for several days.

Are chemical peels safe during pregnancy?

While some peels are safe in pregnancy, others we recommend waiting on until after delivery.  Our trained aestheticians can help you make the best choice.

Are there things that might keep me from being a candidate for chemical peels?

There may be times or conditions when a chemical peel may not be the best option for a client, and should be consulted with a physician before treatment. These include:

  • The use of medications that list photo-sensitivity or skin-thinning as a side-effect
    •  Isotretinoin (Accutane) in particular cannot have been used within one year of treatment
  • Sunburns on the area you would like treated
  • Open, active lesions like cold sores, shingles, or cystic acne breakouts
  • Pregnancy or breast-feeding
  • Family or personal history of keloids
  • Vitiligo
  • Within a week of Botox, injections, or facial waxing
  • Within 6 months of facial surgery
  • Chemotherapy or radiation within 1 year
  • Auto-immune disease
  • Aspirin allergy

What is dermaplaning?
A quick, painless way to exfoliate the dry, dead surface skin cells that contribute to aging, dulness, and discoloration.

How is the procedure performed?
A medical grade scalpel is used to gently scrape away the top layer of skin. In doing so it also removes unwanted “peach fuzz.”

What are the benefits?
By removing the peach fuzz and exfoliating  the skin we are able to help brighten the complexion and smooth the areas of roughness. Furthermore, it helps makeup go on more evenly with a fresher finish throughout the day.

Is it painful?
No. No numbing is required and most people find it relaxing. Some people say it feels similar to a cat licking their face.

Is there a chance I will get cut by the razor?
The razor is held at an angle that will scrape the skin rather than cut it. Occasionally there can be very small nicks on the surface, but these are very superficial, are usually not felt, and heal quickly.

Will the hair grow back darker and thicker?
No. The quality of hair on the face is determined by hormones and chemical signals deeper down in the follicles. Cutting it on the surface won’t change this.

What is the difference between dermaplaning and microdermabrasion?
Both are a painless way to exfoliate the top layer of hyperkeratinized, dead skin cells, but dermaplaning has a slight advantage in that it removes the hair (microdermabrasion) and its exfoliation is slightly deeper.

Can it be combined with other facial treatments?
Absolutely! Many of our patients like to do dermaplaning before a chemical peel because removing the most superficial layer of dead cells allows for the peel to penetrate more deeply, thus making it more effective. It can also easily be done before a ClearLift or IPL laser treatment.

How long does it take?
Usually between 30-45 minutes.

How often can I have it done?
We recommend at least 3 weeks between treatments. The reason for this is that a single treatment removes approx 21 days worth of buildup of  dead cells.

How do I know if I am a good candidate or if this is a good treatment for me?
Usually a dermaplane treatment gets best results if it is combined with high quality skin care and maintenance regimen. Our aestheticians are happy to do a free consultation and come up with a plan that will get you your best overall results!
