Natural Support for Anxiety and Depression

Natural Support for Anxiety and Depression

Most people know logically that chronic stress weakens the immune system. And increases fatigue. And brings on muscle and joint pains. And worsens insomnia. And does a zillion other not-so-awesome things to the body. But if you’re like many of my patients, friends, family, and acquaintances, you want to know what options you have for balancing your nervous system, preferably without adding one more prescription medication to your life.

So, let’s talk about some of the things you can do to support, calm, and nourish your nerves. And of course I need to add the disclaimer that this is in now way replacing your relationship with a trained medical professional. I am not providing you with personal medical advice, just information that might be helpful as you navigate how best nourish and strengthen your own body.

What can balance my nervous system?

Anxiety and depression usually coincide, but not always.

Treatments can be broken down into two categories.

1. Balancing the neurotransmitters.

2. Calming the nerves in general.

When discussing the different treatments I usually break it into two different categories (other practitioners are going to do it differently, but this is the way I prefer):

  1. Balancing the neurotransmitters (i.e. serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine);
  2. Calming the nerves in general.

There are many different prescription medications used for these two classes of treatments (i.e., Zoloft, Xanax, Valium, Lexapro, and Buspirone, just to name a very few). Please understand that I am not opposed to these medications! I have prescribed them my entire career and intend to continue to do so. The scientists who developed these have definitely transformed life as we know it, and they have been literal lifesavers for more people than I count. It’s just that these meds don’t work for everybody (nothing works 100% of the time). Some of them come with too many side effects, some are addictive, and some simply aren’t effective. So until science has figured out how to overcome some of these obstacles I continue to prefer a blended approach of the Eastern and Western worlds.

One of the biggest benefits of using botanicals (plant-based) for medicine is that they actually heal and nourish the cells in a way that only plants can. For information regarding this please visit.

So enough talking! I’m gonna give you my list of my current favorite combinations. There are tons of beautiful options, and I use combinations of dried herbs, tinctures, glycerin macerates, and essential oils. They are definitely most effective when combined with the right diet and lifestyle, and more info on those will be included in another blog post. I am going to list only a portion of the treatments I use because a complete list would be overwhelming and only add to your anxiety!!

For balancing and supporting neurotransmitters my preferences are:

1. Tranquility capsulesOf all the supplements out there for mood, calming,  and sleep, this one is my favorite!!

2. Serenity CapsulesThis blend of botanicals is a great natural way to support the neurotransmitters, particularly dopamin, serotonin, norepinephrine, GABA, and glutamine. It is particularly helpful for people who struggle with sleep problems associated with anxiety and depression.

  • Detailed product information for Serenity Capsules can be found here.

For general calming of the nervous system my preferences are:

1. Super Alpha Calm capsules: Super Alpha Calm is a simple but powerful combination of herbs that promote a calm nervous system without the sedation that comes with many of the synthetic prescription medications. This synergistic blend captures the power of botanicals to nourish and support an overtaxed mind and body, a major step in the rejuvenation process.

  • One of the unique features with this blend is that it is actually a tincture suspended in a pre-gelatinized starch that once mixed with the fluids of the stomach is digested quickly and easily, making it a soothing option for people suffering from any GI distress.
  • Each extract has mood-stabilizing effects, helping with depression, anxiety, memory, and focus. In addition, the essential oils of lavender, petitgrain, and bergamot provide even more calming sensations.
  • As a bonus, the addition of a compound called inositol sets Soothing Calm apart from many other nutritional supplements available.
  • Detailed product information for Super Alpha Calm capsules can be found here.

2. Phytocalm capsules: This is a gentle but effective combination of plants that work synergistically to help calm the nervous system. It is particularly useful when anxiety is affecting the rest of the body, especially the heart and the digestive system.

  • Detailed product information for Phytocalm capsules can be found here.

3. Calming Shot (in office only): An intramuscular injection of amino acids and nutrients known to balance the nerves and neurotransmitters. Beneficial in that it bypasses the but, allowing the nutrients to more quickly and effectively enter the bloodstream and cells.

  • Detailed product information for Calming shot is coming soon.

4. Tranquility Synergy Essential Oil Blend: A powerful blend of oils that helps nourish and heal the nerves while also decreasing inflammation and supporting sleep, digestion, and immunity.

  • Detailed product information for Tranquility Synergy Essential Oil Blend is coming soon.

Healing With Botanicals

Healing With Botanicals

Many people have been taught to fear plant-based medicines. They have been taught that plants can hurt but not really help and that they certainly shouldn’t be mixed with prescriptions. Sadly, when used incorrectly all of those can be true. Luckily, Dr. Wheeler had the incredible opportunity to learn at the feet of masters (Jean Claude Lapraz, Annette Davis, Jean Bokelmann, and Kamyar Hedayat, just to name a few). From these teachers, she learned how to safely and confidently use natural substances in their many different forms to help my patients optimize healing and strength. Dr. Wheeler is one of Idaho’s most educated and trained medical doctors in plant nutrition, healing and health.
